FIGHTING CANCER WITH FUNK: A FUNDRAISING CONCERT

Local artist puts together a concert to make good on promise to family that the cancer fight isn’t theirs alone

Brooklyn, NY – The Christopher Complex & Optimus Funk will hold a fundraiser concert called Music For Life Brooklyn to benefit the Brooklyn office of the American Cancer Society on January 12, 2010 at 8:00 PM at Public Assembly in Brooklyn. The Christopher Complex hopes to raise awareness about cancer and support the search for a cure for this deadly disease. The band will donate thirty percent of ticket proceeds to the organization.

The Christopher Complex, band leader of Optimus Funk, has seen the face of cancer before. He has two family members battling cancer now, his aunt and his mother-in-law. His aunt is suffering from multiple myeloma, and his mother-in-law, who was diagnosed with uterine cancer in the Spring is, now, battling breast cancer. Christopher wants to dedicate this show to these women, and those whom he has lost to cancer, his grandmother and a cousin, by actively supporting the American Cancer Society, as they were able to provide answers to his questions and relieve a lot of the anxiety that takes place when a disease like cancer infects a family member.

“I am passionate about this fight because I see my five year-old son and his relationship with his grandmother and I don’t want him to have to experience what I experienced as a child, the loss of a best friend or any other child, brother, sister, mother, daughter, or father," says the Christopher Complex. "By dedicating some of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society, I know that we have contributed to supplying more resources for individuals to find information, more services to help detect and screen the onset of cancer, fund support groups and provide funds for further research to find a cure. Every little bit helps.”

According to an American Cancer Society website article, Cancer Facts & Figures 2009 Graphs and Figures; Estimated New Cancer Cases and Death by Sex US 2009, “1,479,350” estimated new cases of cancer developed in 2009 in all sites, while an estimated “562,340” lost their battle to the disease.

The Christopher Complex & Optimus Funk is a Brooklyn based Funk, Rock, Soul band that delivers live and entertaining music appealing to your soul, your heart, and your hips. The Funk grooves that have been orchestrated by The Christopher Complex move your soul that you can’t keep your hips in your seat. His music is influenced by Prince, Parliament Funkadelic, James Brown, Miles Davis, just to name a few. His music can be described as "FUNK 2 ROCK your SOUL," overlapping borrowed styles from other music genres across generations. Original songs transcend into covers in a live performance with Optimus Funk that keeps you on your feet.  They put a twist in today’s music by bringing feelings, mystery, wit and excitement back into live shows drawing you in with raw energy, in your face mentality while caressing you with a smooth, yet some times, gritty vocal delivery in clever lyrics. The production is a 3 dimensional movie…it will reach out and touch you.  If making you dance wasn’t enough, they show dedication by giving back to their community with this benefit concert.

The evening will be set with a few words from the organizers of the event, there will be raffles from local shops in Brooklyn (all proceeds to go to American Cancer Society), and information brochures and pamphlets, provided by the American Cancer Society, will be available on how to cope and/or support a loved one fighting cancer.

Live performances for this fundraiser include Rock band, Sweet Velvet; R&B band, Nova Road; R&B singer/songwriter, HAZali; and headlining is The Christopher Complex & Optimus Funk closing down the night.
